October is such a beautiful month in New England. Still warm enough to enjoy the remaining days of “Indian summer”. I awaken early that morning to singing birds and the sound of bells chiming from the village church. I gaze at the clock on my nightstand. It’s exactly the same time Joe told me he loved me, two years ago. “No, I had said to him, you just think you do because I’m helping you.” No matter he has a fiancée named Sheryl Murden. They met during his trial when she befriended him and fell in love while he was fighting for his life. She stood by his side ever since, silently. Shame, or fear of being shunned, kept her relationship with Joseph largely a secret. I was fearless, unafraid to stand up for him. I had no personal attachment to him, unaware I was developing one as I tenaciously fought for his freedom. Joseph confided in me that he never had anyone who believed in him. His parents, especially his dad, were abusive and would always make fun of him. His mother was overindulgent and without strength to protect her children from their father’s wrath and beatings. Joe was unused to loyalty and such fierce commitment. Ours was becoming a highly unusual relationship—full of dedication, fear, hope, laughs, heartbreak, honesty, sadness, and joy. It was a most unusual situation, and one that would never have developed had it not been for our predestined paths. It was certainly outside of my wildest imagination.

Early Friday morning I fumble through my black book for Dr. Michael Baden’s number. After the third ring he answers in his jovial tone of voice. He asks me to fax him the information I want him to review. I am quick to convey the urgency of the situation, explaining that Joe has a December 18 execution date. I forward to him six letters and documents, as well as the PGM blood results, performed by Virginia’s amateur scientist prior to Joe’s trial.

I am now determined to find John Nutter, and to learn what his blood type is. I need to confirm that the blood on Joe’s clothes could have come from one of the sailors he purported to fight with that evening. I telephone his mother in Upton, New York. I am friendly. She responds the same.

“It’s funny, just the other day I pulled the records of my children’s blood type, but John’s wasn’t there. I think he’s O negative.”

After hearing those words, I refrain from screaming out, “Oh my God!” She offers to confirm John’s blood type by calling the pediatrician. Before we hang up I ask if she will provide me documentation as proof. Our conversation leaves me with the strange sense that I am being guided in this journey. I often wonder where my energy or direction comes from.

It’s now imperative that I find the man Joseph fought with that dreadful night. I need to verify Joe’s alibi, and the source of blood on his clothing and in his car.
